MOGADISHU, Somalia – April 15, 2025 — Voter registration for Somalia’s landmark local council elections officially began Tuesday in Shingaani district, part of the Banadir region, marking a major milestone in the country’s democratic progress.
Residents turned out in large numbers, forming long lines at designated registration centers to take part in the historic process of electing their local representatives. This is the first time in more than five decades that Somali citizens are participating in direct local elections.
Banadir Governor Mohamed Ahmed Amiin led by example, becoming the first to register. His move was widely welcomed and inspired others to engage in the democratic process.
This is a proud moment for the people of Mogadishu and Somalia at large,” Governor Amiin said. “Participation is key to building accountable and representative local governance.”
The initiative is being overseen by the National Electoral Commission (NEC), which has affirmed its readiness. Commission Chairperson Abdikarim Ahmed Hassan stated earlier that all the required tools, personnel, and systems are in place to ensure a smooth and credible process.
The Shingaani district, where voter registration is set to begin, has become the first district to launch this campaign. Notably, Shingaani was also the first district to be officially established in 1928. Due to this rich and historic legacy, it was chosen as the starting point for the nationwide voter registration process.
